How to light: ARTILLERY SHELLS
-
1Step 1:
Choose a Safe Launch Area
Find a large open area, free of overhead obstructions (trees, power lines, buildings). Ensure the ground is flat and fire-resistant (concrete, dirt, or a sturdy plywood board). Keep spectators at least 100 feet away. Have a bucket of water or fire extinguisher nearby.
-
2Step 2:
Set Up the Mortar Tube
Place the mortar tube on a hard, flat surface. Secure it using bricks or a cinder block around the base so it doesn’t tip over.
-
3Step 3:
Unwind the Fuse
Pull the fuse slightly away from the shell, fuse is ling enough to run up inside of tube and hang over edge for easy lighting.
-
4Step 4:
Load the Shell
Insert the shell into the mortar tube with the fuse sticking out of the top. Never force it—if it doesn’t slide in easily, don’t use it.
-
5Step 5:
Light and Retreat
Using a long-reach lighter or punk, light the end of the fuse, then quickly back up at least 20-30 feet. Never lean over the tube to light!
-
6Step 6:
Enjoy the Show from a Safe Distance
Keep spectators at least 75 feet away. Watch the shell soar and explode safely from a distance.
-
7Step 7:
Clean Up & Dispose of Safely
Wait at least 15 minutes before approaching the firework. Douse spent fireworks with water to ensure no live embers remain. Dispose of them in a metal container away from flammable materials.
