How to light: Roman Candles
-
1Step 1:
Choose a Safe Location
Use a wide, flat, and open space—asphalt or packed dirt is ideal. Make sure there are no trees, people, vehicles, or buildings in the direction the candle will fire. Keep spectators at least 75 feet away.
-
2Step 2:
Stabilize the Candle
Despite what you may have seen, NEVER hold a Roman Candle. Instead, secure it by placing it in a sturdy launch tube (like PVC), or brace it in a bucket of sand, or use a ground stake. Angle it slightly away from people and structures (approx. 15–20 degrees if possible).
-
3Step 3:
Light the Fuse
Use a punk, safety torch, or long lighter to ignite the fuse. Stand to the side, not over or in front of the candle. As soon as it’s lit, back away at least 15–20 feet.
-
4Step 4:
Watch and Wait
The Roman Candle will shoot out multiple colorful balls in succession. Stay clear until it’s completely finished. Do not approach it until it’s cooled off for at least 10–15 minutes.
-
5Step 5:
Clean Up & Dispose of Safely
Wait at least 15 minutes before approaching the firework. Douse spent fireworks with water to ensure no live embers remain. Dispose of them in a metal container away from flammable materials.
